Job Description

Shipping & Receiving Clerk - Near East Lansing, MI

This role will be responsible for keeping records of all products shipped and received, which will include packing the goods in shipping containers, develop mailing labels and shipping documents and ensure that all orders have been filled correctly.  They will also verify incoming shipments by scanning barcodes to store that information into the computer. The work will be done within or close to the plant, yard or other work site.

Job Responsibilities

  • Receive and process material orders daily, including accepting deliveries, labeling them and distributing packages and letters internally.
  • Receive and unpack material and supplies.  Inputs transaction and maintains paperwork. Operates overhead crane and forklifts.
  • Assemblies orders and prepares goods for shipment.  Records shipment data including weight and charges.  Prepares bills of lading.
  • Studies shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping schedules.
  • Determines method of shipment.  (Purchasing, sales, personal, truck, spare parts) domestic or international.  (UPS, Federal Express, and RPS.)
  • Operates lift truck or uses hand truck to move, convey, or hoist shipments from shipping and receiving platform to shipping dock.
  • Coordinate deliveries to customers and clients daily, including boxing goods, addressing packages, and staying in contact with shipping companies.
  • Maintain the company stockroom by cleaning, organizing, and labeling items in storage on a regular basis.
  • Tears down crates, boxes, recycles, folds, stores, discards as is appropriate.
  • Receives returned items from customers and completes handwritten receiver noting all vendor numbers and condition of items.
  • Receives, records and forwards items scheduled for inspection by Quality Control.
  • Breaks down receivers and distribute to all departments daily.
  • Enters, codes, and otherwise reports status of parts on computer system.  Runs a daily report.
  • Keep records of goods that have been shipped and received, preparing regular shipping and receiving reports for supervisors.
  • Schedule large shipments and coordinate logistics to ensure that there is enough storage space for incoming items and personnel on hand to manage incoming shipments.
  • Perform customer service duties as necessary, maintaining good relationships with shipping companies and clients who are receiving goods.

Background Profile:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Experience with spreadsheet or database software such as Microsoft Excel
  • A minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Forklift license is preferred
